Beyond Cosby, how celebrities accused of sexual misconduct have fared

Prosecutors in the Philadelphia suburb of Norristown, Pa., charged Bill Cosby with first-degree aggravated indecent assault Wednesday.

This is the first time charges have been officially brought against America's beloved TV dad, who has been in the spotlight with more than 50 accusations of sexual assault stemming from the 1960s.

From Tupac Shakur to Rob Lowe, pop culture icons have been accused, acquitted, convicted and settled cases of varying sexual misconduct charges. Their careers have rebounded to varying degrees.

Here is a look at nine celebrities who were accused, charged or convicted of sexual assault or crimes that were sexual in nature and where they are now.

Woody Allen

 Woody Allen is best known for writing and directing over 40 feature-length films, including Sleeper, Manhattan and Hannah and Her Sisters. Allen has also won four Academy Awards, including best director for Annie Hall.

 Accusations: After Woody Allen and Mia Farrow separated in 1993, a legal battle for the custody of their three children began. Before those proceedings, a doctor reported that Allen had sexually molested his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow. In September 1993, Connecticut state attorney Frank Maco declined to prosecute Allen, saying that while he had probable cause, he did not wish to inflict any further anguish on Dylan by making her testify. Farrow won custody of their adopted children and Allen was denied visitation rights.

 Since then: This year, it was announced that Allen will write and direct a half-hour TV series for Amazon Studios. Allen continues to release a movie each year and has secured financing and support for his next three films through Sony Pictures Classics.

Tupac Shakur

• Known as 2Pac, Tupac Amaru Shakur was a top-selling '90s rapper, known for hits like I Get Around and Keep Your Head Up. The rapper was 25 when he was killed in Las Vegas in 1996.

 Convicted: In 1994, Tupac served 15 days in jail after he was found guilty of assaulting director Allen Hughes. The same year, Tupac was found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman he invited to his hotel room. The rapper was sentenced to 1½  to 4½ years in prison and ended up serving less than a year, the Los Angeles Times reported.

 Since then: Despite Tupac's tumultuous relationship with the law, he remained a top-selling artist. In 1995, while serving time for sexual assault, he became the first artist to have a No. 1 song on the Billboard charts while serving a prison sentence, Rolling Stone magazine reported. Since his death, the rapper has continued to be revered by many, and his estate has continued to earn millions of dollars each year in record sales.

Roman Polanski

• Roman Polanski is a filmmaker known for classics like The Tenant, Rosemary's Baby and Chinatown. Polanski also directed The Pianist, which went on to win three Academy Awards, including best director.

 Pleaded guilty: In 1977, Polanski was arrested and charged in Los Angeles with five offenses against 13-year-old Samantha Gailey. Polanski later accepted a plea bargain in exchange for a lesser charge of engaging in unlawful sexual intercourse. However, upon learning that he was most likely to face imprisonment, Polanski fled to Europe.

 Since then: Polanski continues to make movies and receive awards, including a lifetime-achievement award at the Zurich Film Festival in 2009. There are ongoing attempts to bring Polanski back to the U.S. to face the courts, but all have been unsuccessful. Polanski is currently preparing to shoot a feature film in Warsaw called D about the notorious 19th-century Dreyfus affair, a political scandal that divided France in 1894.

Michael Jackson

• Known as the "King of Pop," Michael Jackson was a multi-Grammy Award-winning pop artist from the 1960s to his death in 2009.

 Accusations, charges: In 1993, he was accused of sexually abusing 13-year-old Jordan Chandler. In 2005, he was indicted on four counts of molesting a minor, four counts of intoxicating a minor in order to molest him, one count of attempted child molestation and one count of conspiring to hold the boy and his family captive at his Neverland Ranch, as well as conspiring to commit extortion and child abduction. A jury found Jackson not guilty on all charges.

 Since then: Jackson went on to become the most-awarded recording artist in history, including the Guinness World Records title "Most Successful Entertainer of All Time."

Kobe Bryant

 Kobe Bryant, a two-time NBA Finals MVP, was the youngest person to ever play in the NBA when he entered the league straight from high school in 1996. He has spent his entire career with the Los Angeles Lakers, winning five NBA championships.

 Charges: In 2003, a hotel employee accused Bryant of rape. Bryant admitted to an adulterous sexual encounter with his accuser but denied the assault allegation. The case was dropped after Bryant’s accuser refused to testify.

 Since then: Bryant has gone on to win the All-Star MVP Award four times and won gold medals at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics playing on the U.S. national basketball team. He announced his retirement from professional basketball in November.

Paul Reubens aka "Pee-wee Herman"

 Paul Reubens is best known for his role as Pee-wee Herman on the children's show Pee-wee's Playhouse. He later played the character in the cult classic Pee-wee's Big Adventure.

 Case settled: In 1991, Reubens was charged with public masturbation after he allegedly was caught in the act in a Sarasota, Fla., movie theater. In 2001, he was charged with possessing child pornography. He later settled the case and received three years' probation and agreed to be registered as a sex offender during his probation, the Associated Press reported.

 Since then:Reuben will star in a Netflix original production of Pee-wee's Big Holiday. The movie will be released in 2016.

Rob Lowe

In 1988, Rob Lowe’s career took a major hit after he was involved in a sex scandal that included a videotape of him having sex with two females, one of whom was a minor.

 Rob Lowe rose to stardom in the 1980s after a role in St. Elmo's Fire. The bad-boy celeb was part of Hollywood's so-called "Brat Pack" in the '80s. Throughout his career, he has dabbled in TV and movies.

 Case settled: In 1988, Rob Lowe's career took a major hit after he was involved in a sex scandal that included a videotape of him having sex with two females, one who was a minor. The girl's mother sued the actor, and the case was settled out of court. Lowe maintains he was unaware the girl was 16.

Since then: Most recently, Lowe was part of the casts of The West Wing and Parks and Recreation and stars in a new Fox series, The Grinder.

R. Kelly

• Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, producer and rapper Robert Kelly, known professionally as R. Kelly, is known for hits including Bump N' Grind, I Believe I Can Fly and Ignition (Remix). In March 2011, R. Kelly was named the most successful R&B artist of the past 25 years by Billboard.

Charges:Kelly was acquitted in 2008 of 14 counts of child pornography. (Seven of the original 21 counts were dismissed on a technicality.) A video allegedly showing Kelly engaging in sex with an underage girl and urinating on her surfaced in 2002. The trial was delayed numerous times. After less than a day of deliberations, a Chicago jury found Kelly not guilty, citing that the identity of the girl was inconclusive.

Since then: The artist has released multiple albums since 2008, including Epic, Love Letter and Black Panties, and performed at the 2010 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony and the BET Awards show. Kelly recently collaborated with Lady Gaga, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Justin Beiber and Jennifer Hudson.

Mike Tyson

• At age 20, Mike Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion in boxing history when he defeated Trevor Berbick in 1986. Tyson was the first heavyweight boxer to simultaneously hold the WBA, WBC and IBF titles, and the only heavyweight to successively unify them.

Convicted: Tyson was convicted in Indiana on one count of rape and two of criminal deviate conduct in 1992 for raping Desiree Washington, an 18-year-old Miss Black America pageant contestant. Tyson served three years of his six-year sentence and was released early for good behavior.

Since then: Tyson is the star of a new cartoon, Mike Tyson Mysteries, which premiered in October 2014 on Adult Swim. The show draws from Tyson's own life, as he teams with a pet pigeon to be a hard-punching detective, solve crimes and help others to make up for his past. Fan gear includes an "Iron Mike" doll — either in a sweatsuit or cowboy suit.
