Where to find Siskiyou Halloween events, 'Nightmare Before Christmas' and ghost tours

Siskiyou County is conjuring up Halloween and harvest festival fun in October, with events for families and grownups.

High on the list of go-to ghoul outings is the city of Weed's Trunk-or-Treat night. Kids can get an early start filling up their plastic pumpkins and pillowcases with goodies from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Oct. 28 along Main Street in the historic district.

"Last year we went through about 600 pounds of candy (and) had about 1,500 guests come through," said Weed Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Richard Dinges. He added that people showed up from Fall River to Redding.

Yreka's Trick or Treat Downtown is from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 31. Yreka downtown businesses will hand out candy to costumed kids throughout the afternoon, said event planner Jenny Grenvik of Grenvik Group Real Estate. Another big draw is the ninth annual McCloud Apple Harvest Festival, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14 along Main Street. Celebrate the ripening of this versatile fall fruit with live music, a quilt show, a pumpkin patch, apple pies and craft, food and drink vendor booths. Where to find more family-friendly Halloween events

The Siskiyou Family YMCA hosts a Halloween-themed event for kids during Parent’s Night Out. Kids in kindergarten to sixth grade can come in costume for activities from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 27 at 350 North Foothill Drive in Yreka. Grenada Gardens hosts its autumn "Harvest of Hope" Fair ― promoting Breast Cancer Awareness ― from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 28 at Grenada Gardens Senior Living, 424 County Highway A-12 in Grenada. Activities include a costume contest, a bake sale, a petting zoo, pumpkin painting, a chili cook-off, a pie-eating contest and a vintage car show. Take a 'haunted' cemetery or ghost tour

The Siskiyou County Historical Society hosts guided tours of historic sites in Yreka.

October tours include the St. Joseph’s Cemetery tour at 5 p.m. on Oct. 14, starting from East Center Street, offFoothill.

The Miner Street ghost tour departs at 6 p.m. on Oct. 27 from the Franco-American Hotel at 310 W Miner St.

For those gutsy enough to enter a cemetery on All Hallow's Eve, the Spooky Halloween Evergreen Cemetery walking tour is at 6 p.m. on Oct. 31, starting from the end of Evergreen Lane.

Halloween parties for adults only

The McCloud Chamber of Commerce brews up the town's sixth annual Halloween Pub Crawl for adults from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Oct. 28. Check for updates on the McCloud Chamber of Commerce's Facebook page at facebook.com/McCloudChamber.

The Jefferson Center for the Arts' Halloween Costume Party kicks off at 8 p.m. on Oct. 28 at the center, 1124 Pine Grove Drive in Mount Shasta. It features a deejay and live music, food and drinks. 'Nightmare Before Christmas' and 'Shining': Avery hosts classic Halloween movie nights

Avery Memorial Theatre in Etna scares up spooky classic movies this month.

  • For people ages 18 and older, the theater shows the film adaptation of Stephen King's "The Shining" on Oct. 21. This film is rated R.
  • The theater also hosts a showing of Tim Burton's 1993 stop-motion animated musical “The Nightmare Before Christmas” on Oct. 22.

Doors open at 5 p.m. on show nights at 430 Main St. Tickets are available at the door. Cost is $10 for adults; $5 for children ages 5 and younger, and for students with ASB cards.
