Charles Michael Lester, "Mike," 86, passed away on January 1, 2024, in Cottage Grove, Oregon. Mike was born April 24, 1937, in Portland, OR to Colonel Guy Dwight Lester and Rae Lester. As the son of a career military man, Mike spent his youth traveling the world wherever his father was stationed and graduated from high school in Ankara, Turkey. He went on to study at Nichols College and got his bachelor's degree in Botany from the University of Montana in Missoula. He met his wife Pauline "Paula," on a blind date at the university. They married on January 21, 1961.

After marriage, he was drafted into the army, and his unit, Army 57th Transportation Company (H-21) went to Vietnam from November 1961 to November 1962. After returning home and graduating from the University, he was assigned to Ukonom Ranger Station in Somes Bar, CA. He, Paula, and their two daughters then moved to Mt. Shasta, CA in 1974 where he worked for Southern Pacific Land Company, and later in life worked summers at Howard Prairie Resort in Southern Oregon.

He enjoyed fly fishing in Montana, Idaho, Oregon, and California and sailing with his wife on local lakes. He was passionate about woodworking and built several wooden boats over the years in his garage. He also loved the Oregon Coast, especially around Arch Cape and Yachats.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jon. He is survived by his wife Paula Wicklund Lester; daughters Karen O'Neill (Pat) and Rae Rankin (Steve); and three grandchildren Guy Mort (Brianna), Spencer Mort (Megan), and Elizabeth Rankin.

His final wishes were to be cremated. No services will be held. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your favorite charity in his name.
